Antique French Kitchen Storage Lidded Jar Gold Medal Hygiene Expo 1888 Stamped DESCRIPTION Antique French porcelain pot known as a sustenteur dating to the late 19th century. Complete with its original pewter screw lid this pot is marked both on the porcelain base and the pewter lid. This soup pot finds its origin in the early 16th century with Ambroise Paré, surgeon and french anatomist, who uses a "vessel of pewter" to make broths from meat to give to the sick people. This object consists of a pot closed by a screw cover in pewter. It is based on a little foot whose base is pierced with holes to let escape the air bubbles in the water bath. Pieces of meat and some vegetables are placed inside and is set in a water bath for four to six hours. The food is cooked under pressure in the closed pot. Under the combined effect of pressure and duration of cooking, the creatine of meat is released in the soup, which gives it nourishing and invigorating qualities. This preparation optimizes feeding and digestion of the patient, which promotes its recovery. Its use covers about four hundred years of the medical prescription. This would make a great birthday gift or as a great addition to any kitchen, apothecary or French collection. This could be used as a make up jar container or for kitchen herbs. Pot marked: Bull trademark Marque Depose Lid marked: Medaille D'Or Exposition D'Hygiene Paris 1888 Bull trademark Marque Depose MEASUREMENTS French pot measures 5" wide by 5.25" tall and weighs 1lb 14oz. CONDITION In good condition considering age and use and ready to use but appears to be missing its porcelain internal stopper (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
