Here we have a vintage Art Deco era, possibly a little earlier (1910's - 1930's) two compartment wooden box, ideal for smaller cigars, cigarettes, or for larger playing cards. Basically it is multi functional but was probably a smokers box of some sort. It is heavily lacquered on wood. The lacquer has wear which can be clearly seen from the accompanying pictures. It is so heavily lacquered that at first I thought it may have been veneered with Bakelite...the early 20th century forerunner to modern plastic and used to make the outer casing to early 20th century radios for example.  What really makes this box special is the very high quality, ornate relief, silver plated scene featuring 17th century style Dutch cavaliers / soldiers etc. The little wear that can be seen in my pictures, showing the base metal coming through in a few places is actually accentuated in my photos and is nowhere near as noticeable when you hold the piece. There is no actual damage to the box itself, which measures approximately 21.8 cms by 16.8 cms and about 5 - 5.1 cms tall, including the relief decor to the lid. It weighs a sturdy 584 grammes prior to packaging. As can be seen from the accompanying pictures it is stamped EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver)with Holland underneath, a small motif (maker's mark?) to the right of this and 90 over the number 4, which I believe is a sign of the quality of silver plating. Also, in the actual scene, to the left is a raised flag and there are 3 X's on it, X above an X above another X.  From the marks, design, quality, lacquering (similar to Japanned - earlier 20th century lacquering in the Japanese style), pins and hinges, no screws and definitely no Philips screws (first produced and patented in the U.S. early 1900's and commonly used in Europe and elsewhere since the 1930's), I can definitely say this is early 20th century. The one other thing is that to the interior of the lid is a metal cartouche bearing the name of (presumably) the original owner, Leo Jacson. This may well have been a gentleman with Jewish heritage pre World War Two, who may have moved to London to get away from The Nazis. This is an assumption but it also lends a bit of Social History and anyone with the time, who may want to, may be able to do some research and discover this box's background. Or, should you want to present it as a gift and wanted to, the plaque, I am sure, could be easily removed and also, should any potential buyer wish, be replaced with another. ***An exceptionally good box with a great silver plated panel, functional, decorative and displayable at a very reasonable price, especially when you consider that there is a FREE UK P&P option and that ALL OTHER SHIPPING options are lowered accordingly to reflect this!*** ***Please do view my store for vintage, boxes, collectables, pieces from around the world and lots, lots more!
