Description

Here we have a Smiths Westminster chiming mantel clock in serviced working condition. It has been cleaned, inspected and lubricated, see details below. It’s a mechanical wind-up clock, with an accurate floating balance movement, keeping time to within a few minutes per week.. good for a vintage clock.

The 8-day movement was manufactured, by Smiths, in 1960. The Mahogony case is in condition fair for its age but parts of the lacquer finish has flaked away on the lower right side and the front. This is not obvious though. There are no missing veneer pieces. The case has been polished for this presentation.  NO case restoration work has been attempted, in preference of maintaining the honest aged patina. (Please see the pictures).

The rear door has a clasp and closes with a clasp. The front bezel is polished Chrome with no pitting. The glass is clean & scratch free. The bezel & glass assembly has no ‘drop’ on opening and has a reassuring click on closing. It has an easy to read, 6-inch face, which is described with 12 Roman numerals. The face is as clean and clear.

The clock has a good strong tick and chimes in the manner of the Westminster Clock; Big Ben. It has a beautiful ’old’ tone each quarter hour. There is also a full hour count strike at the top of the hour. There is a lever on clock face (next to IX numeral) to allow the chimes and strikes to be silenced if required.  On restarting; the chimes will be out of step but they automatically re-synchronise within 90 minutes. It is usually a lot quicker. Please be patient.

The clock has no battery so needs to be wound once per week.

Approximate size is;  14" Wide   9" High   5" Deep.

Service & Lubrication

The movement was extracted from the case. It was in very good condition so it didn’t need to be completely stripped down. The springs were completely removed, checked for strength and lubricated with special ‘Horoglide’ mainspring oil.

Inspection shows the clock has been well looked after. It exhibits negligible wear so no new pivot bushings needed to be fitted. The pivot holes have correctly lightly oiled with fine German clock oil. Good for another 60 years!!

The clock will not need to be serviced again for many years and will continue to keep good time. It is good practice to service a mechanical clock every 5 years or so.

Floating Balance

Techy stuff; A floating balance is a robust & accurate escapement which eliminates the need for a pendulum. There is a tuned balance wheel suspended (floating) from a fine reverse helix spring. This allows it to swing, left & right freely, on a taught wire through two low friction ruby jewels. This results in far better stability than a pendulum. The clock will even run perfectly well on a boat.

Scope of Supply

This super clock will be supplied with its key. No pendulum is required so it’s easy to set-up. Place in its required position, wind the 3 holes, set the right time and away it will go.

All will be packed for safe delivery by courier. Personal collection is also available.

Low starting bid, no reserve. It’s heavy, the packing and express delivery charge is £7.35 due to the insurance, size and weight, sorry.
