An absolutely fabulous, large and impressive vintage West Germany necklace set with faux pearls and imitation emerald glass cabochons.
This necklace is a typical example of re-imagining jewellery throughout the centuries. The original jewellery of this opulent style, with intricate gold filigree openwork and large precious cabochons was first used during Renaissance era. It was then widely copied in Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century, and then the style was revived in Czechia in the 1920-30s and West Germany in the 1960s.
A truly fascinating piece of jewellery history and a bold statement necklace to impress!
It is made of goldtone brass and glass paste.
Unsigned, but this is a well known West German style and craftsmanship, and I acquired a small collection of West German jewellery with some signed pieces, all in this style.
Length 62cm.
Pendant measures 4x5cm.
