A5. ANTIQUE 4/4 VIOLIN. MADE MITTENWALD (GERMANY) c1860. GOOD PLAYING ORDER.
ANGLESEY VIOLINS
This fullsize violin is unlabelled but I'm confident in saying it was made in the Mittenwald area of Germany some time between 1840 and 1880. (For the technically minded, this is because of the one-piece lower rib with Mittenwald 'notch', the rib/plate junction overhang, the varnish, the long scroll fluting and the back of the pegbox.) The violin is in excellent condition for its age with no damage or repairs of any sort. Signs of use, obviously, but the varnish is also extremely good. Being in such good condition, it will keep its value well (and would also be ready for immediate retail sale, if that's what the buyer has in mind.)
Playing qualities. The violin is set up, ready to play without further adjustment. I have played the violin briefly to check the set-up and to assess the sound. It plays loudly and clearly. A good strong tone throughout the range. It would be suitable for a beginner up to around the grade 6 standard.
Scroll and pegbox . These are carved to a high standard; beautifully done. The pegs seem to be a more recent set, probably rosewood: they all adjust correctly.
Neck and fingerboard . Both smooth. The fingerboard is from hard, black ebony: no grooving.
Strings. I have fitted a new set of good quality perlon-cored strings.
Bridge . I left on the bridge fitted when I received the violin. (I assume it was fitted by a luthier at the same time fitting the pegs, tailpiece and chinrest.)
Tailpiece and chinrest . The tailpiece has four fine tuners. The chinrest is a standard type.
Front of body . This is made from spruce with close grain spacing on the treble side, wider grain on the bass side. The purfling is inlaid.
Ribs and back . Made from flamed maple.
Condition and appearance . The violin has no cracks, repaired or otherwise, and no other damage or repairs. The varnish has a few blemishes, but only a few.
Fast despatch . I can usually get items in the post on the day after receiving payment.
Just to make it clear: the violin can be posted to your house as normal or it can be sent to your nearest Argos store. Your choice.

Cases and bows . I often send violins in an old case but not always. It depends on availability. I sometimes have better cases which I list for sale on Ebay (So take a look at 'seller's other items'.) The violin is being sold without a bow. Again, I sometimes list bows for sale, so take a look.
Postage to UK. I send violins to UK addresses using Parcelforce 48. This is an insured and trackable service. But sales to UK only. If a violin is more valuable I sometimes use Parcelforce 24 or AM, at my expense. Violins travel at my risk. I will put the tracking number onto the Ebay page
