Designed by Frederick Lux, with U.S. Patent #109227 granted April 12, 1938, this is the rarely seen Lux Sundial Mystery Clock produced by The Lux Clock Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Waterbury, Connecticut. No sun? No problem. The Lux Sundial Clock is a spring-driven key-wound clock with a single 'pointer' rather than two hands, giving it the unique look of a sundial. The polished brass pointer sits atop a fiery copper-orange sun, passing the hours surrounded by a tooth notched chapter ring marked in five minute increments. The brass pointer was missing when it came into my possession, and has been replaced with a copy fabricated in my shop using CAD drafting and photos of the original to produce an accurate replica. All other case components are original and have been refinished in keeping with the original look and colors:
  •  The thin brass electroplating of the deck / dial face, almost entirely gone is now a brassy gold metallic automotive finish. A small dent in the edge of the deck, at the 10:15 position, was not removed and is the only damage found on the case.
  •  The stamp cut sun design, Roman enumeration and chapter ring plate, originally coated with a thin electroplate of copper, also near entirely missing, is now replicated with a custom blend of metallic mica powders suspended in a clear automotive finish.
  •  The original painted finish of the movement 'can' and base ring, described in original Lux ad copy as a "white marble" look, is replicated in a faux marbled treatment with a white satin finish.
  • All painted surfaces received a final protective automotive clear coat finish.
The spring powered, brass balance wheel type movement, also original, was produced by Lux and marketed as their 30-hour 'no-overwind' mechanism which was standard in many of their key-wound models. The movement was ultrasonic cleaned and re-lubricated. No damage or indication of wear was found before being re-installed and tested for operation. Function of the movement is smooth and works properly, and has kept good time in trial operation. Can be used both horizontally on a shelf or desk, or wall mounted vertically. Dimensions of this rare novelty clock are: 4 in. H (incl. pointer) X 5 in. W X 5 in. D Be sure to check out all the item photos. Feel free to ask any questions; I'll be happy to help. Purchase / Shipment of this clock is limited to the USA only.
