The clock is complete having been recently restored and the movement fully overhauled and comes with a set of weights and pendulum. The pictures are brighter in most circumstances than the clock case or movement shows. The movement, dial and case are guaranteed to be original to each other. THE DIAL: 100% mint, the clock dial measures 12 x 17 inches high. The solid brass dial is original to the movement. The dial with engraving to the dial centre, and elaborate gilded brass spandrels to the corners. The dial centre is both matted and engraved in a cornicopia of interesting featureas. The two winding holes are ringed. The silvered chapter-ring with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabics for the minute around the outside edge and also silvered seconds ring and date wheel (in working order). The dial with nicely made blued steel hands for the seconds, minute and hour, all are in fine order. The arch with painted biblical scene of Adam, Eve and the Serpent, the arms move with an extended piece coming off the pallets arbor THE MOVEMENT: 100% mint, with an 8-day strking movement. The clock runs for a full 8-days between windings and most unsually strikes the hours on a large bell and the quarters on 2-smaller bells with a ting-tang sound. The arch with automaton of Adam and Eve and the serpent a favourite Welsh biblical theme and the second seen by this maker. This is a very substantial and unusual movement with four knopped pillars with two trains all in good working order and overhauled and fully serviced. The clock movement with the ting-tang train and musical barrel running off the striking train and with two bells. The clock is supplied with a long pendulum with brass bob, and weights. The clock comes with a winding key for the clock, which needs to be wound every 8-days. THE CASE: 100%, the burr walnut veneered case on an oak carcase, with caddy top, stands 233 cm high, and 243 to top of finial. The hood with an opening door (lock and key) is glazed to the front, and also to the sides, with a pagoda top, feature fret and 3 brass finials. The trunk with a long arched door (86 cm) and lock/key to door. The case with nicely featured burr walnut panels, some of which have lifted ever so slightly as is normal for a clock of this age, but looks stunning and most attractive. The case with nicely featured burr walnut oysters, some of which have lifted slightly, but look stunning and most attractive. The sides of the trunk with two features panels of burr walnut oysters. The door with walnut d-mouldings in good order. The carcase of the case is beautifully toned and aged oak, clearly original, with some restoration as is normal for a clock of this period. The base of the case with feture burr walnut oyster panel to the front and to the sides. The base sits on a single footed skirting. The base with simple walnut mouldings and a fine line inlay around the feature panels. THE WEIGHTS, PENDULUM AND KEY: 100% mint, the clock comes with a pair of lead weights, a brass faced pendulum and period winding key. The clock has recently been fully over-hauled and keeps excellent time and strikes the quarters on several bells and the hour on the larger bell. THE MAKER: John Thackwell (father and son with the same name, common practice in 18th and 19th century England)) traded at Angel street in Cardiif, working through the period 1740-1830 and both used the same address. This clock is most likely from John Thackwell Senior. There is a question and answer page to a later painted dial clock of ca. 1830 in Clocks Magazine, 1995, 10, page 55, with apicture of a late painted dial John Thackwell clock of typical Cardiff style with an automaton to the arch, showing Adam and Eve and the serpent. There are entries from the two main Horological reference books (Baillie and Loomes) with clock and watch makers details listed, with data on the Thackwell’s. Parochial Records of St. John’s Cardiff, entry for 1785, Mr. John Thackwell to repair the clock to make it go fifty hours. Cardiff Pigot Directory for 1822-23, listing John Thackwell of Angel Street.
