This was a very nice looking 18th century brass faced 8 day lacquered longcase clock once upon a time. The clock was bought recently from a deceased estate in Essex. It was made by William Avenell of Alresford who is a member of quite a well known family of clockmakers. It has a very nice brass moonphase dial with date and strike silent dial. The movement is in good working order and is complete with weights, pendulum and key. The main fault with the clock is the case. The original owner had the case re"veneered in what I can only describe as sticky back Lino. I"ve taken most of it off the case but theres still some left around the base and the hood(see pictures). This has had the effect of stripping the case back although it looks as if most of that was done before it was veneered. The case needs to be relacquered to bring it back to the clock it once was. The dimensions are. Height-79ins. Depth-9ins. Hood Width-19ins. Trunk Width-14ins. This will be a good project for somebody with experience of Japanning. This will need to be collected but can be delivered within Kent/London/Essex or Suffolk for a reasonable cost.
