Working Brass Acetylene Gas Lamp Light With Electric Spark Ignition, Open Flame

Up for auction is this working acetylene gas wall bracket lamp, complete with working spark ignition lighter, original cotton covered wire and 4 inch brass shade carrier.

The lamp projects 8 inches from the wall. The tap has a 3/8ths BSP female thread and is designed to screw direct to a projecting iron pipe. You could of course make up a suitable plate instead.

This is fitted with an open flame acetylene burner. These were used in rural areas where town gas was not available, and require a feed of acetylene gas at 3 to 4 inches water Gauge.

The igniter is in the form of a small secondary tap in the burner base. ( now fitted with short wire loop handle, see last two pictures )  Opening the tap wipes a contact across the spring wire. It is adjusted so the wire springs out from the contact, breaking the electicity flow, just as the contact passes over the burner centre. The spring is there so that the mechanism tends to remain fully open or fully off, positions that ensure the electrodes are out of the flame and also not in contact and draining the battery .

Elsewhere in the building ( see other listings ) they'd have several dry batteries and a kick coil. (Note , this is not a 'coil' as in a car, that is high tension ) . When the circuit is broken the magentic field in the kick coil collapses , and causes a low-tension spark across the contacts, system also used in oil engines of the time.

As you can see there is only one wire, 'return' is via the brass fitting and steel pipe work back to the battery, as on old car lighting.

Igniter requires approx 4.5 to 6 volts battery DC and a kick coil to work.

 Includes ceramic electric connection block.

No damage, wire is a bit rubbed but does not short, shade gallery is straight and has all 3 working screws, uses a 4 inch base flange fitting shade . As you can see it works perfectly, nice white fishtail shaped flame .
