THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918

THE GREAT WAR USHERED IN THE 20TH CENTURY. IT WAS THE WAR TO END ALL WARS, THAT SET THE STAGE FOR THE BLOODIEST CENTURY IN HUMAN HISTORY. Yet it more than just a war between nations, it was a war between what was and what was to be. The old world was dying and the new world had yet to be born. People of all classes saw it as some great cleansing fire that would accelerate this battle and lead to a better world. However when it was over, it was more than just men that died in the mud of the battlefields; the naive dreams of progress, along with the innocence of the pre-world war, faith in God and hope in the future all died in the trenches of Europe.

WWI THE GREAT WAR 1916

By 1916 it looked loke warfare on all fronts was grinding to a halt so the British decided that the solution to the problem was to create a mass popular army.  Previous pleas had raised over a million volunteers but in February, conscription began for men aged between 18 and 41.  the germans decided that the solution to the stalemate was to undertake a huge offensive at Verdun in February.  Their intention was a war of attrition which would 'bleed France white'.  To try and relieve the pressure on the front at Verdun, the British and French undertook a push at the Somme and, on the first day of the battle (1 July), 20.000 Britons were killed and a further 40.000 injured.

WWI SOMME SECRET TUNNEL WARS

Under the trenches and fields of the Somme lies a complex and extensive network of tunnels. Here, beneath the wastes of No Man s Land, British and German miners risked a terrible death in trying to undermine the enemy, laying charges that would wreak death and destruction in the tunnels around them and in trenches above. It was the most barbaric conflict of the Great War, a secret but deadly game of blindfold cat-and-mouse where it was kill or be killed: there was no second place for the loser. The slightest sound could be overheard. Detection meant counter-mining, and an explosion from nowhere that could tear you apart, maim, bury you alive or poison you with gas. At least 45,000 British soldiers worked beneath the Somme battlefields. But who were they? With unique access to both British and German workings that have been untouched and unexplored since 1918, we can explore these ghost tunnels, and reveal the lives and stories of the men who built, lived, worked and died in them.
