Classic 1951 Motobecane Mobylette AV3, Barn Find For Spares Or Restoration, V5C. Extremely rare in the UK and getting rarer in France, this is a super early AV3 from 1951, only the second year of production. This particular one was the more basic model that was never even fitted with a stand. Supplied new by R Bodard, Cognac Motos in Cognac to E Chauveau of Bergerac according to the plaques attached to the bike it was dragged from a French barn last year and is ripe for restoration being about 90% complete. The bike is garaged in Kennington, London SE5 and viewing is encouraged. After so long in a barn you'd expect it to have really suffered with surface rust but the paintwork has a nice patina, the chrome is rusty and pitted mostly but the seat is surprisingly good. The petrol tank is solid but missing its cap and in need of cleaning out, it should be in between the rear mudguard and the seat down tube. It has been fitted with the wrong headlight, the original would have been pretty squat and not much use so that would've been a popular up grade, the tail light lens is broken. The nearside chain guard and chain is missing. It will need new tyres. Mechanically it comes with a later engine from 1958 which is attached only for the pictures but a loose rod through the upper bracket. It is missing carburettor parts and belt pulley and without a doubt will be in need of a full rebuild and new cabling. Despite its rarity parts are surprisingly easy to find. Aplins of Bristol are still suppliers of parts and provide a friendly and efficient service, there are two specialist moped clubs that I urge you to join, the EACC http://www.autocycle.org.uk/eacc.html and the NACC http://thebuzzingclub.net/ both providing support and advise.
