Hess enlisted in the Austrian Army in 1805 and was soon assigned to the Quartermaster General, using him for trigonometric work. After having distinguished himself as a first lieutenant at Aspern and Wagram, he returned to the quartermaster general's staff as a captain in 1813. After the first peace agreement in the course of the wars of liberation in Paris, he was sent to Piedmont with special assignments. When hostilities broke out again in 1815 (Napoleon's return from Elba), he was promoted to major and employed in Prince Schwarzenberg's headquarters.

He then served as deputy military commissar in Piedmont for two years. When Radetzky was given supreme command in Italy in March 1831, Hess joined him as Chief of the Quartermaster General's Staff. According to Radetzky, he designed a new order of maneuver for infantry, cavalry and artillery. She proved herself to be excellent in the years that followed.

In 1834 Hess became Brigadier General in Moravia, and in 1840 he was put in charge of the Quartermaster General's staff. In 1842 he became head of the 49th Infantry Regiment, which later bore his name. In 1843 he was appointed Field Marshal Lieutenant.

When the revolution broke out in 1848, Hess returned to Radetzky's side and headed the general staff. In this capacity he closed on 08.08. August 1848 the armistice after which the troops of Piedmont had to withdraw behind the Ticino. In the following campaign in 1849, Radetzky recognized in an order of the day that his chief of staff played a large part in the victory at Novara. Hess was appointed Privy Councilor and out of turn Feldzeugmeister and at the same time the “real chief” of the Quartermaster General's staff and also a baron.

At the end of 1850, Hess was appointed Chief of Staff for the entire army. In the years that followed, he went on several military missions, for example to Warsaw, Saint Petersburg and Berlin. In 1854, during the Crimean War, he commanded the Austrian troops in Galicia and Transylvania and caused the Russians to evacuate the principalities on the Danube.

In 1859, Hess was sent to Italy in the Sardinian War shortly before the Battle of Magenta, but was unable to assert his dispositions. After the lost battle of Solferino he was forced to sign the Armistice of Villafranca with the French. Next was promoted to Field Marshal and Commander-in-Chief of the Army in Italy and in 1860 - appointed Captain of the Trabant Guard - while being relieved of his position as Chief of Staff. Hess was appointed to the Austrian manor in 1861.

His first marriage was to Katharina von Hess, his second to his niece Anna Diller, his sister's daughter. After the death of his five children, he adopted his grandnephew Friedrich in 1854, whose descendants call themselves Hess-Diller. Heinrich Hermann Joseph Freiherr von Hess died on 13. April 1870 in his hometown of Vienna and was buried in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 33). (wikipedia)
